The straight 6-cylinder is considered by many MBZ enthusiast to be the best-built MBZ motor not an aluminum block but cast steel with chrome-moly linings. It outperformed contemporary sports cars like the Porsche 944 and IROC Camaro with a top speed of 140 mph and 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds. The E-Class was faster than the larger S-Class 380 and 500 models but could also be driven carefully to manage 30 mpg on the highway. Due to the high cost of German Engineered build-quality the W124 was designed to last many miles with awards actually given for high mileage versions at 1000000 miles.
